Abstract

Children with asthma from rural locations often lack support for their health needs due to barriers including transportation difficulties, distance, and limited income. This study examines a solution to help elementary students in rural areas by connecting children to health care providers. Children received instruction on asthma symptoms and management and are tested for learning across modules. Medical providers engage with children via two-way conferencing. Educational materials include interacting with medical equipment, working one-on-one with the provider, and working as a group. Success for the program is measured cognitively through pretests and posttests in multiple test administrations. Behavioral measures are included in a follow-up. Children demonstrate learning in content areas for asthma management and increases in quality of life.
