Competency-Based Medical Education and Student Electronic Health Record Use: A Longitudinal Analysis Including School-Level Effects

Abstract

Accelerated implementation of electronic health record (EHR) systems and guidelines established by medical organizations have made the underlying knowledge and skill associated with competent EHR use important for medical students to acquire early in their education. Using a national sample of US medical students, the current study uses multilevel modeling to estimate how student interactions with EHRs have shifted from 2012 to 2017, and how school characteristics impact these interactions for core inpatient clinical clerkships. Findings indicated that medical students’ odds of using and entering information into EHRs increased over time for all inpatient rotations and that school characteristics had little or no effect on these odds.
