Changing Teaching Practice: A Case Study of International Baccalaureate Implementation in Urban Public Schools

Mon, April 8, 4:10 to 5:40pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 700 Level, Room 703

Abstract

The International Baccalaureate (IB) is a growing as a reform initiative for urban public schools. But a key question for all improvement efforts is, how can teaching be changed to sustainably and intentionally implement new practices? This paper reports on a mixed methods study investigating how teachers in Chicago Public Schools implement the IB Learner Profile into Middle Years Programme classrooms. We employed a sequential mixed methods research design. Our findings reflect key issues emerging from teachers understanding, incorporation into classroom practice, and supports and resources offered to do such work. We argue that a key issue in changing teaching practice is generating local resources that are specific to their school.
