Radical Mothering as Pedagogy

Abstract

In this paper, the authors draw on the frameworks Black Feminist Thought and Engaged Pedagogy to highlight approaches to teaching which center radical mothering as an act of resistance and act of pedagogy. By featuring a collection of literature, our paper explores two Black women’s understanding of mothering within the context of teaching. We highlight how teacher educators can employ mothering practices to disrupt dominant discourses that marginalize students of color through three aspects: revolutionary mothering, empowerment, and building community.
