This study explores the concurrent use of Knowledge Forum, as an online community space, during face-to-face discussions of a grade 6 News class. This intervention aimed to establish externalization of ideas into knowledge artifacts (online records of ideas) as a core community practice. Descriptive statistics illustrate changes in students’ online contributions. The intervention was considered a success by the teacher and researchers, but this practice caters to the capturing of ideas not shared in face-to-face discussions and is likely to miss the main ideas developed through face-to-face discussions in the classroom.
