Perceptions of College Affordability in Alternative Schools: A Focus on Gang-Associated Latino Youth

Abstract

The paper describes results of a year-long study focused on financial aid and college affordability knowledge of 13 gang affiliated youth in an alternative school. Findings suggest that (1) this student population has little to no understanding of college costs and financing options; (2) there are no structures in place in continuation schools we studied to support college going, and (3) there were no transition plans in place for students in out of alternative school settings.
