Mobile App-Based Asynchronous Curriculum Intervention for Pediatric Residents in Neonatal Intensive Care: A Pilot Study

Abstract

Rotation educational objectives are often neglected due to the demands of patient care and constraints of resident duty hours. The ubiquity of mobile technology represents a prime vehicle for delivery of an asynchronous educational curricula to the next generation of residents. A prospective, pretest posttest quasi experimental research design with a control group on a convenience sample (n=20) of NICU residents was devised. An asynchronous educational curriculum of video lectures was created on core topics in neonatal medicine delivered via a mobile application. This pilot study of a mobile-based educational curriculum did not demonstrate a statistically significant increase in pediatric resident knowledge after the intervention deployment but did demonstrate improvement in resident confidence in medical management skills in several domains.
