This paper critically reviews academic literature on public alternative schools in the U.S. from 1970 to today to 1) identify historical narratives told by dominant and often conflicting strands of educational research; 2) analyze what knowledges those narratives offer and what they preclude; and 3) explore subaltern histories from and beyond the margins of academic research that rewrite the history of alternative schools. Using academic texts as historical sources, the paper argues that a more robust understanding of school pushout and sustainable alternatives requires broader inclusion of perspectives of the youth most targeted by school pushout, particularly youth of color, youth in foster care, youth with disabilities, and LGBTQ youth.
