Intersecting Mixed Methods With Action Research: Implications for Designing Stakeholder-Informed, Context-Specific, and Action-Oriented Studies

Abstract

The growing complexity of societal issues along with increased diversity of potential solutions call for research approaches that cross several methodological boundaries and design considerations. It requires a meaningful intersection of approaches that integrate different methods and data sources, incorporate participatory approaches, and allow for a cyclical approach to solving a problem of practical importance to a community. We discuss how mixed methods (MM) and action research (AR) can jointly provide a strong methodological foundation for designing stakeholder-informed, context-specific, and action-oriented studies. Using MMAR framework and its tools, we describe five practical steps and related actions that can help researchers conceptualize and design mixed methods studies that are tailored to specific community needs by engaging stakeholders and considering contextual factors.
