This study explores the factors surrounding principal turnover in charter schools. While a growing body of research has analyzed principal attrition in traditional public school settings, few studies have focused on charter school environments. The authors utilized employment data from the Texas Education Agency (TEA), focusing on the school principal population of Texas schools from 1995 through 2012. We employed discrete time risk hazard modelling to assess the influence of various school and teacher characteristics on the probability of either switching schools or exiting the profession. Results showed that turnover rates for charter school principals were significantly greater than for traditional public school principals, and that female and older principals are less likely to leave.
