Settling and Unsettling the Social Studies: Interrogating the Social Studies Curriculum Through Keywords

Mon, April 8, 4:10 to 5:40pm, Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel, Floor: Mezzanine Level, Maple West

Abstract

Social studies curriculum is often settled through state standards and position statements, but drawing on work in cultural studies, this session aims to unsettle curriculum through the interrogation of keywords in the field. This session is the culmination of a three year effort with 50 authors that resulted in the upcoming book, Keywords in the Social Studies: Concepts and Conversations (in press). This paper offers a theoretical argument and process for such an undertaking and will offer session attendees an opportunity to learn about this project and specific keyword interrogations.
