Scoping Educational Technology Research: Critical Review of Publications in Selected Journals From 2011 to 2017

Abstract

This current project is a critical review of publications in selected journals from 2011 to 2017. The journals were British Journal of Educational Technology (BJET), Computers and Education (C&E), Educational Technology & Society (ETS), Educational Technology Research & Development (ETR&D), and Journal of Computer Assisted Learning (JCAL). A total of 3,655 documents was retrieved without excluding any of the published documents from the journals throughout the selected years, including editorials and opinion articles. In-depth study-feature coding was completed. The current paper presents preliminary findings from the analyses for the full set of 3,655 documents and the smaller 2,747 set of empirical research manuscripts, and offers recommendations for future research.
