Hands-On Design: Engagement and Collaboration in Making a Literary Arts Magazine

Sat, April 6, 10:25 to 11:55am, Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel, Floor: Lower Concourse, Grand Centre

Abstract

This study examines the “material practices of literacy” among one group of high school students (Haas & McGrath, 2018) as they created a literary arts magazine at their urban public high school. Exploring students’ interactions with and among material objects through participant observation, interviews, and video-cued narrative reflection revealed how their individual, embodied histories with material objects afforded entry points into the “collaborative design” processes (Broderick, 2014) from which the literary arts magazine emerged. An analysis of the study’s findings suggests the importance of noticing the many ways that students interact with a variety of material artifacts throughout the design process, which can help teachers and researchers better understand how students can be more involved and engaged in literacy activities.
