Abstract

What Common Core Standards for Mathematical Practice (SMP) do secondary mathematics teachers of linguistically diverse groups of students identify as part of their planned lessons, and what are the ways in which these teachers describe the SMPs they intend to enact? This paper describes a study of mathematics teachers’ lesson planning in which eight out of eleven teachers described planning to engage (or having engaged) their students in SMP6, Attend to Precision. While most teachers indicated an intention to focus on this SMP, their descriptions of this practice varied. In this paper, I discuss the different interpretations teachers used for this Standard of Mathematical Practice.
