Quantifying Aspects of Socialization and Influence on Black Male Doctoral Students' Self-Efficacy

Abstract

Half of all doctoral students leave their program before completing their degree(s), either voluntarily to pursue other options or due to lack of academic progress. One factor that has been consistently shown as a buffer to doctoral attrition and a major determinant of doctoral student success is academic self-efficacy. In this study, we analyze multi-institutional survey data from Black males to assess dimensions of the socialization progress and to measure the influence of such factors on doctoral students' self-efficacy. Results reveal keen insights into socialization and the impact that such factors on Black male doctoral students self-beliefs.
