What Factors Are Associated With Implementing Successful Science Investigations?

Abstract

With the adoption of the Next Generation Science Standards, science teachers are being asked to do more ambitious science investigations with their students. However, students, teachers, and schools have varying levels of capacity for carrying out these investigations. A variety of mechanisms have been posited as factors that enhance or inhibit this undertaking. Drawing on a survey of middle school science teachers who have recently conducted ambitious science investigations, this study examines what factors are associated with teachers’ perceptions of student success in carrying out science investigations. Analysis of survey data finds that in addition to characteristics of the school, teachers and students, specific choices in the design and implementation of science investigations are associated with perceptions of success.
