Does It Help or Hinder? A Survival Analysis Examining Factors Impacting Freshman Timely Graduation

Abstract

Using survival analysis, a quantitative method that examines time to an event, this study examines the characteristics of those who graduate within five years compared to four years, the barriers attributed to “timely” degree, and ways in which campuses can help support their educational and career goals while still providing equitable and meaningful education to all students. Specifically, this paper presents results and discussion responding to the following research questions: (1) At what point do 5-year graduates fall off the 4-year graduation trajectory? And what are the causes of change?; (2) What characteristics predict departure from graduating within 4-years?; (3) When are these students at greatest risk of not succeeding?; and (4) Does the profile of risk differ across subgroups?
