Preparing Scientists or Citizens? A Science Teacher's Conundrum in a Small Island Developing State

Tue, April 9, 12:20 to 1:50pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 800 Level, Hall F

Abstract

This study will (i) investigate teachers’ perceptions of their roles in preparing students in science and (ii) analyse the gaps between teachers’ perceptions of their instructional roles and their implementation of the science curriculum at the secondary level with a view of making recommendations to close them. Using a case study approach, eight secondary science teachers from different secondary schools in a small island developing state will be interviewed and observed during a nine-month period. It is hoped that answers to the research questions could provide evidence to shape narratives that could clarify understandings of science teachers’ dilemmas, shape policy and practice; and redound to the socioeconomic success of the small island developing state.
