"I Suffered Until the End of Class": The Minoritization of Teacher Candidates of Color

Abstract

This study is a narrative inquiry designed to reveal how the racial minoritization teacher candidates’ shoulder in broader society is mirrored and exacerbated by their teacher education program. If a teacher education program claims commitments to inclusion along racial lines and yet teacher candidates who embody minoritized racial identities feel mistreated by the content and pedagogy of the program, the program risks not preparing any teacher candidate to honor the racial pluralism of their school and community. The teacher candidate narratives in this study foster new debates and brighten new paths regarding racial inclusion and empowerment in teacher education.
