Abstract

The purpose of this article is to examine the collaboration in one urban school district between a public secondary school and the surrounding community working together to promote school reform and community development. This empirical research article represents one component of a larger ongoing project investigating the intersection of urban school reform and community development within a neoliberal context. The qualitative data collected for this project consists of over 50 interviews each lasting 45-90 minutes from multiple stakeholder groups – school staff, parents, community members and district leadership. One preliminary finding illuminates the importance of “non-traditional” partners from the community and their role in transforming opportunities for students. My findings have implications for leadership training, urban school reform, policy and practice.
