Abstract

This study focuses on the role of the Black family on the participation of African American girls in STEM activities and interest in STEM careers. Using qualitative methods, the study illuminates the ways in which family members of girls participating in a culturally relevant, STEM after school program support and nurture their prospective dreams and aspirations to pursue STEM careers. With a particular focus on female family members, this study provokes dialogue concerning the role of extended family members and also considers male family figures impact in tandem with or in place of female family members support.
