Abstract

As our society continues to face pervasive inequities, it is crucial that educational researchers examine how schools could support young people to understand and confront important social issues. How might schools be places that foster student agency and civic engagement around pressing issues in their communities? In keeping with this year’s theme: “Leveraging Education Research in a ‘Post-Truth’ Era: Multimodal Narratives to Democratize Evidence,” this work rests on the belief that schools should create learning spaces that position students as agents of change, not numerical metrics, who are capable of (re)writing narratives built on our democratic ideals. Drawing on case study methodologies, this presentation shares what happened when one urban, public high school enacted YPAR for all 9th graders.
