This case study follows a secondary literacy teacher who attended an immersive summer professional development program and explores her experiences of returning to the classroom after a “life-changing” endeavor studying practical nonviolence in India. The transformations in perception that unfolded during the year after her participation are discussed in two main sections: one about her reading the violences of literacy curriculum content and traditional instructional practices, and one about her reading the violences of the broader world of school. This paper offers insights about teacher education and the potential for transformational learning, and an example of some of the ways a teacher has lived with transformation, and centers a discussion of some of the more subtle violences of schooling.
