Intensity and Breadth of Out-of-School Time Activity Participation: Connecting Latent Classes, Student Characteristics, and Educational Outcomes

Sat, April 6, 12:20 to 1:50pm, Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel, Floor: Lower Concourse, Grand Centre

Abstract

In order to help clarify the associations between intensity and breadth of OST activity participation with SEL and academic outcomes, while illuminating differences in participation levels by student characteristics, we employed latent class analysis (LCA) with statewide data to identify different classifications of OST activity participation that can aid practitioners to foster opportunities to improve students’ developmental skills and academic performance and success. Five classes were identified: high-intensity/high breadth, low-intensity/high-breadth, high-intensity in sports, moderate-intensity in sports, and low-intensity/low-breadth. The moderate- and high-intensity classes had higher socio-emotional skills and supports, as well as academic performance and aspirations, than the overall sample.
