This study explores the cost (personal effort and sacrifices) experienced by female-identifying undergraduate students studying computer science and technology. The study employs a qualitative case study methodology using in-depth semi-structured interviews with 19 participants (nine females, two transgender females, eight males). Eccles' expectancy theory of motivation (1983, 2002, 2009) informed the study design. Data analysis reveals that all genders hold high utility value for the computer science and technology career and education. We found a high cost for all students especially with respect to health and wellness. In addition, the associated cost is higher for female-identifying participants. There are more challenges and negative experiences reported by the female-identifying participants including difficulties having their voice heard, harassment, hostility and isolation.
