Abstract

Professional School Counselors (PSCs) receive limited pre-service training in college and career advising despite the increased emphasis in educational policy and school accountability on ensuring high school graduates are ready for college and career. In 2016, Texas began developing an online, competency-based professional development platform to improve the college and career advising skills of PSCs. This study examines how the training influenced the college and career advising self-efficacy beliefs of the 873 PSCs who participated. The results show that PSCs exhibited significantly higher levels of college and career advising self-efficacy after participating in the training. These findings suggest that brief, targeted, modular training may be an effective strategy for bolstering PSCs knowledge and skills in college and career advising.
