Abstract

This manuscript details two cases of a larger qualitative study on the teaching of war, to the children of current or recently retired soldiers in a politically and socially conservative rural Southern town near a special forces military base. Two social studies teachers react to the pressures of the 2016 presidential election, the conservative nature of the community, the socio-emotional needs of their students differently. This manuscript details their teaching and the teachers reason for their choices and student reaction to the pedagogical and curricular choices of both teachers.
