Liberating Literacies: Awajún and Wampís Multimodal Narratives in a "Post-Truth" Global Context

Abstract

Amidst an entourage of self-righteous politicians who try to influence public opinion by claiming to own the truth about what is right for the nation, who belongs and who doesn´t, Peruvian Amazonian originarios (autochthonous ones), as the Awajún and Wampís indigenous professionals residing in Lima, prefer to be called, take part in a participatory photography research project to share their views on education, indigenousness, nationality and globalization. The images they produce and the narratives that accompany them show the researcher how these originari@ intellectuals live in our contemporary world, educate themselves, and work by relying on their multimodal literacies that help them open liberating liminal spaces of dialogue.
