Abstract

The number of Latinx enrolled in US higher education continues to grow, however attrition mean many leave without baccalaureate degrees. Early validating experiences are known to improve the student experience and persistence (Rendon, 1994). Results from the first study discussed in this paper reveal that validating experiences (both in and out of the classroom) led to more help-seeking behaviors and shift first-generation Latinx undergraduates’ view of academic challenges and poor performance. Results from the second study describes ways Latinx undergraduate success is informed, framed, and produced by the knowledge, beliefs, and experiences of Latinx student affairs professionals, particularly from those who in this paper are identified as equity-oriented practitioners.
