Poster #48 - "It's Good Teaching": A Novice Teacher's Conceptualization and Enactment of Responsive Middle-Level Mathematics Teaching

Fri, April 5, 4:20 to 5:50pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 300 Level, Hall C

Abstract

In this qualitative case study, we explore the ways a novice middle school mathematics teacher conceptualizes and enacts Responsive Middle Level Mathematics Teaching (RMLMT), an integration of both developmental and cultural responsiveness. Data reveal that RMLMT was viewed as synonymous with “good” teaching. Three domains were uncovered that explain how RMLMT was conceptualized and enacted: holding an asset-based mindset, fostering a responsive classroom environment, and implementing instruction that meets the needs of all students.
