Abstract

This manuscript is an autoethnographic account of the decisions made and the results in the design of a unit co-created with a United States history teacher focused on the questions: “What is a just war?” and “How do we end war?” Students were asked to critique the reasons for going to war, how wars were fought, and the resistance to these wars. The unit was co-created with a 5th year teacher who self-described as both a critical teacher and a burn out. This teacher, Ms. Evans left teaching at the end of the co-created unit. This autoethnographic research details the co-development of the unit of instruction, the teaching of the unit and navigating the increasing despair of the participating teacher.
