A Long Journey: A Longitudinal Analysis of Postsecondary Pathways for Students That Experienced Homelessness

Abstract

This study uses quantitative data from a statewide longitudinal education data system to identify patterns of postsecondary enrollment and completion for students with experience in homelessness. Few studies examine longitudinal data to show trends in enrollment and postsecondary completion of homeless students. This study compares the patterns for those with past homelessness to those with no documentation of homelessness and identifies similarities and differences in the postsecondary pathways. The research builds on previous work addressing institutional capacity to support students experiencing homelessness and gives evidence of a need to engage students with prior homelessness as well. This study adds to the conversation of college access and success for low-income students, highlighting the need to promote success for marginalized students.
