Noticing the Invisible Work of Variables Across Math and Computer Science

Abstract

This study explores how pre-instructional adult learners’ previous experience using variables in algebraic problem solving can connect to conceptions of variable in computer science (CS). The investigator focused on variable because: it’s taught at the beginning of CS courses, a time with high attrition; it’s fundamental to advanced concepts; and adult learners will have experience through previous math.

When participants were prompted to reflect on two problem solving strategies (one using variable and one without), their characterization of variable shifted from static to dynamic. Findings question the notion that students lack an effective model of a computer. Further, they highlight connections that participants can make to everyday experiences provided learning designs framed towards fluidity between scientific and spontaneous concepts.
