Effects of Majors and Minority-Serving Status: Black and Latinx STEM Students' Long-Term Social Justice Outcomes

Abstract

Using a national sample of Black and Latinx STEM bachelor’s degree recipients this study examines whether different STEM majors differentially predict long-term social justice outcomes and whether such relationships vary across minority-serving institutional contexts. Findings show that the effects of some STEM majors on Black and Latinx STEM students’ long-term social justice outcomes vary on whether they attended a minority-serving institution or predominantly white institution. Implications for increasing diversity and inclusivity in STEM are discussed.
