Learning Spaces at Scale: A University-Level Classroom Needs Analysis

Abstract

This mixed methods study is intended to comprehensively examine faculty and student perceptions of physical learning environments for teaching and learning across an entire university. Using mixed methods procedures that encompassed large scale faculty and student surveys, faculty focus groups, and faculty interviews, the study revealed that faculty most frequently adopted the following pedagogical strategies : interactive lecture, class discussion, collaborative learning, and group activities. In terms of classroom features, faculty valued learning spaces that offered visibility for students, space for student movement, configurable classroom arrangements, movable tables and chairs, accessible whiteboards/projection screens, and controllable technologies. Students, by comparison, especially valued adequate workspace, visibility, comfortable seating, and accessible power outlets. Implications for future research are offered.
