Motivational Factors That Empower First-Generation Latina Undergraduate Students to Succeed

Abstract

Research shows that Latinas are entering college at a higher rate. A substantial proportion are first-generation college students with neither parent receiving more than a high school education. While research shows first-generation students are less likely to receive a college degree, very little research looks at what is contributing to Latina academic success. The purpose of this study is to understand what is motivating Latina first-generation students to persist in college through a self-determination framework. This study presents findings from a thematic analysis conducted on Latina students’ open-ended responses to the question “How has being a first-generation student impacted your college experience?”. Findings provide insight into the values these students possess which motivate them to continue persisting in college.
