Research has highlighted the benefits of students’ interest and involvement in music and dance in school or after school activities. However, less is known on the impact of such participation on post-secondary educational aspirations. This study examined relations of participating in after-school dance or music lessons with educational aspirations of high school students. The former analysis uses propensity score matching to provide a comparison group to assess relationships. By using a propensity score matched comparison group, the initial analyses control for background variables including race/ethnicity, grade, age, and free or reduced-priced lunch status. Logistic regression results from a sample of students in grades 9 and 11 (N = 30,056) from 2016 show that participation is positively associated with educational aspirations.
