Abstract

High-stakes testing is one prominent feature of the ongoing standards-based reform in the United States. It has received both credits of achieving equity and promoting educational quality and credits of disengaging students and placing inordinate value on test score over learning. China is one of the countries where high-stakes testing has dominated the educational system. In this mixed-method study, we examined the physics identity of 108 students from a key high school and 188 physics majors from a top-ten university in a metropolis in China. We found a significant gender difference in high school and a significant increase from high school to the first year of college. High-stakes testing may temporarily arouse student accountability but should be used cautiously.
