Abstract

Among Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) students, the number of students enrolled in community colleges has increased greatly. Using theories of transformational/institutional change and capacity building, this study explores the process of a two-year institution becoming an Asian American Native American Pacific Islander-serving institution (AANAPISI) and what changes were made through the federal AANAPSI designation and funding. Results show that AANAPISI designation and funding brought changes to the institution both culturally and structurally. There were also evidences on students’ success, which has implications for the sustainability and scalability of the grant-funded programs, leading to further discussions on making transformational changes on campus through programs and services to better serve and meet the needs of students.
