Historically Black Colleges and Universities Teacher Education Programs Impact on Black Educators' Experiences and Identities

Abstract

This paper aims to better understand how Historically Black Colleges and Universities teacher education programs influence Black teachers’ perspectives, beliefs, and pedagogical practices. Phenomenology is used as a methodology to examine Black teachers’ experiences. This study is driven by the theory figured worlds to identify how Black educators participate, construct, and negotiate their identity in various cultural spaces across time and events. The findings warrant further implication for teacher education programs as well as diversifying the teaching force.
