Traditionally, schools have developed initiatives to “fix” parents and “socialize” them into how schools work in the U.S. (Baquedano-López, Alexander, & Hernandez, 2013). Some teachers and researchers are calling for a new paradigm of family engagement in schools (Barajas-López & Ishimaru, 2016; Lindsey & Lindsey, 2011) that systematically and concurrently address power and privilege issues with multiple stakeholders. Currently, however, we do not have a clear understanding of what these initiatives look like or how to develop them (Ishimaru, 2017). In this research study, we explore the hopes and fears of teacher candidates around developing and participating in such an analysis.
