Abstract

With the advent of social media and the excessive consumption of images on a daily basis, there is a need to increase the visual literacy of members of society, particularly college students. The Trump era has been met with more visible racist and racialized experiences on college campuses and is a call for educators to engage students in developing their racial literacy skills. This study uses Granier’s framework of racial literacy as a model for higher education practitioners to learn how to use visual texts to increase racial literacy and the potential dangers in not teaching students how to critically examine visual texts.
