For many countries, inequitable access to quality education at the early grades leads to low educational attainment for the poorest students. One way to assess these inequities, and identify possible mediators, is to consider the role of instructional leadership, which helps to give students access to more rigorous curriculum and instruction. This study examines the extent that instructional leadership influences the mediated relationship between student family resources and math opportunity to learn on math reasoning skills across a diverse set of countries. We used a two-level structural equation model with 2011 TIMSS data and found that instructional leadership mediates the relationship between school composition and student home capital/resources and math opportunity to learn and math reasoning skills.
