Teacher Turnover, Teacher Absenteeism, and Ineffective Teachers: Creating Superheroes in School Leaders

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to explore and describe the experiences of three African-American females in their first years of leadership as principals in their elementary schools. This paper discusses the experiences and barriers faced by these principals as they attempt to analyze the culture and climate of these organizations through a problem-solving approach which incorporates qualitative and quantitative analysis. In three of the seven case studies in this study, the data revealed five common themes involving creating a culture of personnel accountability and sustainability. This study offers insight into the challenges and barriers that new principals face to change the landscape of their school-sites and improve student learning.
