Over the past two decades, we have seen the emergence of a science of learning that brings together education researchers and practitioners with cognitive, developmental and neuroscience. The emerging science of learning is creating recommendations and guidelines for teaching and learning across the life span and across various subject domains. This talk will examine the educational, cognitive, developmental and neuroscience of early mathematics learning. I will delineate ways in which new knowledge has the potential to transform educational practice, including new ways of teaching fractions, understanding students who struggle with mathematics, and addressing student, teacher and parent anxiety about mathematics. Crucially, we will also discuss how educators can best access and use this information, and what changes are needed in research-policy-practice partnerships.
