International Collaborations and Exchanges Between Taiwan and Southeast Asia: Higher Education Perspectives

Abstract

According to the Ministry of Education in Taiwan, the number of students from Southbound countries studying in Taiwan reached 37,999 in 2017. Also, being encouraged by the New Southbound Policy (NSP) the number of students from South East Asia is expected to rise in the near future. Along with NSP initiatives, two tracks have been set up: 1) the establishment international English programs/courses and 2) offshore workshops and short courses during university visits. In this study the presenters will review the links between the case university with Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and South Asia Universities, the English-taught programs, and share the lessons learned from development and implementation of such initiatives. The paper also assesses and examines international collaborations from international students’ perspectives. The results reflected in the study provide both the opportunities and challenges for the globalization of higher education in Taiwan under the New South Bound Policy.
