Digital Portfolio in Teacher Education: Development of Autonomous Thinking Teachers

Abstract

Teacher education needs to be transformative in order to equip teachers with the knowledge, skills and values needed for them to be effective in the 21st century classroom. As such, to prepare autonomous thinking teachers with a strong teacher identity who assume ownership of their learning and reflective practice, teacher education needs to be value-based and harness the affordance of technology. The findings of our mixed methods study therefore corroborate existing research on the use of the digital portfolio as a tool to help pre-service teachers crystallize their teaching identity, and to provide a cognitive framework to help build their conceptual map of teaching and learning, thereby making visible their inquiry processes, and serve to develop their competencies as a teacher.
