Session Summary

28.048 - LGBTQ and Allied Parents Speak Out About Their Experiences at School

Sat, April 6, 10:25 to 11:55am, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 700 Level, Room 704

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

This session is to share, compare and contrast current research findings on the experiences of LGBTQ parents and the parents of LGBTQ children and youth at school in two countries: Canada and Australia. As a set, all four papers examine the ways teachers, principals, parents, and community educators can work as allies and advocates of LGBTQ, children youth, and families in school. This work is critical in a world where LGBTQ students and families still have difficulty securing acceptance and support at school; often experience verbal and physical harassment and (3) internalize homophobia and transphobia.
