Abstract

Teacher Mentoring is depicted internationally as a contextualized supervisory endeavor that promotes student teachers’ professional development. Teacher Education programs worldwide contribute to position schools as learning organizations by supporting human resource potential (Senge, 1992).
This symposium aims at bringing international perspectives on how teacher mentoring is conceptualized in initial teacher education programs in six countries: India, Brazil, Russia, Malta, Spain, and Portugal. In all cases, teacher learning at the workplace is described by examining: (a) the context of mentoring within national education standards and policy reform frameworks; (b) the mentoring models used to support student teachers’ understanding of practice. Mentors’ perceptions, dilemmas, and conversations will be under scrutiny to shed light on the complexities of the mentoring profession.
