63.075 - Invisible Labors of Black Women Educators: Negotiating Institutional and Situational Racism in the Education Workforce

Abstract

Despite significant efforts of Black feminist educators to center Black women’s and girls’ experiences in educational spaces, there remains a dearth of research on Black women educators’ processing, negotiation, and resistance to racism and White Supremacy as they engage in their own educational praxis. Driven by a theoretical framework steeped in Black feminist thought as well as Critical Race Theory, anticolonial theories, and Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy, this panel explores the lived experiences of a diverse cross-section of women of color including immigrant women, biracial women, and Black women in TESOL. Specifically, we examine their invisible labor in educational contexts, particularly the work that their positioning at the intersections of race and gender requires of them.
